In our sunny climate, your horse is going to need some form of shade.
Overheating may be more of a risk to horses than exposure to poor weather. This is because their large body size makes it difficult for them to cool down quickly, and digesting their high-fibre diet gives off a lot of heat.
A horse that becomes overheated will become very stressed, trying to seek shade.
If your horse has white areas, such as a white blaze, remember that your horse’s skin can burn. Your horse’s eyes are also at risk of sun damage, especially if the forelock doesn’t provide coverage.
TIPS
- A stable is likely to be too hot to provide comfortable shade in hot weather – provide a shaded area outside so your horse can get some relief.
