Hygiene Matters
Hygiene is paramount when it comes to keeping your horse healthy. Parasites and disease-carriers such as flies will thrive in conditions where there is a lot of dung and dirt. Disinfection and cleaning are particularly important for foaling boxes, and in the presence of any sick horses on your property.
TIPS
- Remove manure and dirty bedding from your horse’s stable at least twice a day
- Regularly clean and disinfect your horse’s stable, equipment and transport vehicles.
- If you are roving from horse to horse, ensure you don’t spread disease via your clothing, hands or boots: wear gloves and protective gear, disinfect your boots, and wash your hands thoroughly after being with each horse.
- Ensure you thoroughly wash and disinfect any towels, rags, wipes or cloths, especially in foaling boxes.
- Fluid from a sick horse’s nose or mouth can spread disease – always clean and disinfect equipment exposed to any body fluids from horses before using it on another horse, e.g. halters, lead ropes and twitches. If possible, use separate gear for each horse.
