HERPES VIRUS

Are young horses more at risk of equine herpes virus?

Young horses are particularly at risk of equine Herpes virus. The respiratory disease caused by EHV most commonly affects young horses. Shedding via respiratory secretions typically lasts 7-10 days but may be longer, with aerosol being the primary means of transmission, either directly or indirectly through poor hygiene. The risk of Herpes virus can be minimised with vaccination. Your horse can be vaccinated from 3 months of age.
